"Israel shall be your name... a nation and a congregation of nations shall descend from you... The land that l gave to Abraham and to Isaac, I will give to you; and to your offspring after you" (Genesis 35:10-12)

Israel is the old-new homeland of the Jewish people: its beginnings are recorded in the Bible and its history stretches across the centuries to its re-establishment as a sovereign state in 1948. In lsrael's Declaration of Independence it is proclaimed:

"The State of Israel will be open forJewish immigration and for the ingathering of the exiles; it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the Prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture: it will safeguard the holy places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations."
